For the MUSIC lovers
A little late for a note, but if I don’t get this out, then I’ll never get to sleep. So get ready for some music everyone. Lately, I’ve gotten into Three Days Grace and Muse because I really like their music. Hold onto that statement okay?
Alright, let’s stop beating around the bush. This whole thing came about when I kept hearing and reading through random stuff that Slipknot isn’t metal. How is it not? I mean I guess you could talk about the technicalities of it and start flooding my comment box with pointless banter on how Slipknot isn’t metal, but hold your thoughts until after this little rant.
Slipknot is technically considered Nu Metal. It goes along the same lines as Korn, since they consider that to be Nu Metal. But I would definitely disagree with Korn being Nu Metal, they have a lot of similarities with their power ballads that Metallica does and if you think Metallica isn’t metal, you should turn around and face the corner you shameful music lover poser. I think Metallica sets the standards for metal, honestly, but that’s my opinion. Okay, getting a little off topic here.
Slipknot is metal because Nu Metal is a sub-genre of Metal…therefore Slipknot is Metal. You can’t say Slipknot is no Metal, but Nu Metal because the whole purpose of sub categorizing something is to break it down into smaller and more definable bits. Which doing that to music is stupid to be honest.
Why do you say that Austen? Surely you want to know what genre a music is? Yeah, I guess. But to subcategory the music is ridiculous because you could debate that one album is more Nu Metal while another is more Death Metal; therefore, it defeats the purpose of actually using subcategories. If bands could slightly change music to make them jump into another subcategory, that means that they are not a particular genre because they jump from one to another, so using a basic categorizing method would be better.
Basic categories? Like what? Lets see, we got Classic Rock, Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Heavy Metal, Rap, Pop, Punk, Instrumental, Classical, Opera, etc. But Austen, you crazy music lover, why is there heavy and classic versions if we’re using basic categories. Ah, good question. Because there is a difference in say Dethklok and Slipknot to Metallica and Disturbed. All of which are metal, but the first two are definitely focused more on “heavier” attributes than actual melody of Metallica and Disturbed.
But, Austen, isn’t that a subcategory? No, not really, because it’s not becoming a subcategory, but more of an alternative. Kind of like picking out deals of whether to get this 20 yrds of material for $20 or go for the 50 yrds for $45. Essentially the last thing would be the best deal, but you have to consider whether or not you’ll use 50 yrds of that material. Okay, okay, not the best example, but you get the gist right? No? You suck.
Anyways, what I am saying is that just because a band is considered a subcategory of a basic category, does not mean that the band is not part of the basic category. Yes there is a difference in subcategories, I get it. But classifying bands in that matter is kind of stupid because one album, for example, Slipknot’s first two albums were definitely leaning towards more screamo and hard guitars, but their last albums were definitely more harmonious with more definite beats. Am I saying one is better than the other? No.
If we are going to use genres to compete in a ridiculous and never-ending battle of what is better than the other, we’re better off not using genres. Because using genres contains us into a certain way of thinking and we’re convinced all others are shit. But they aren’t. Obviously, some people like it and are listening to it, so it’s not to them. Your opinions aren’t truth.
This leads to the statement I told you to hold on to. I like them because I like their music. Because I LIKE their MUSIC. Not genre, but music. Have I listened to other genres? Yes I have and I have a few songs I like, would I ever buy their albums? No, because I don’t like a lot of their music. Yes I lean towards Rock N’ Roll because that’s what I like, but I will NOT condemn another genre because I dislike it. All genres have equal weight in the world and your little and pathetic opinion won’t shift it no matter how self-centered you are, so stop condemning it. Music is an art, an expression of what we feel in our hearts and if your heart doesn’t lean towards a particular music, then don’t listen to it, but don’t condemn it because it’s not you, because it’s someone else.
Think about all the times they said Rap was crap. Or country was stupid. Or R&B was weak. Or rock was lame. Think about how that angered you. Why do this on and on? Maybe I am getting over heated here, but I’m an artist and this is what I think. My opinion might not mean much, but at least it’s a level one, one that has truth and standing.
For all of you who claim to be “music lovers” and join this pointless genre war, you are not music lovers, but genre lovers. Comparable to those who discriminate because of difference. If you think I’m getting worked up over nothing, then you don’t have the same love for the arts as me. So for all of you who love music for music, keep rocking and keep jamming to the sound of MUSIC.
